賤物賤命

  每一年的感恩節後的黑色星期五,都是零售業景氣的最重要指標,尤其是這個年頭,金融海嘯仍在大力沖刷之際,這天的業績倍受關注。據周六公布的初步統計數字,周五的營業額比去年增長有百分之三。本來一般估計數字要跌的,現不跌反升,有些人認為這是難得的利好消息,但真的如此可喜嗎?

  當然不是,首先,這百分之三的增長在減去通貨膨脹,實際上是持平。除此之外,商家都擔心未來三星期內生意都不會有什麼驚喜,說不定年底前最興旺的一天已過去了。月底結帳,今年的購物季也極可能是廿年來最差勁的。

  以上這些數據的分析和預測都是意料之中,黑色星期五最令人意外的是紐約沃爾瑪發生踩死人事件。為數約兩千名等待搶購平價貨的民眾,在周五清晨不守秩序的衝入該店,推倒沃爾瑪一名臨時工並將之踩死。事後店方為了善後而要清場暫停營業,還受到客人鼓譟抗議。有市民利用手機拍攝了救護員在現場為死者急救的情況,錄到旁邊有不少人在高聲說笑。為了買點便宜,便可以如此粗暴不顧人命;看到急救的現場,一些人就如看戲,一點不覺得事態嚴重。

  這場奪命的血拚過後,有人指責店方沒有做好應付人流的準備,也有批評警方沒有留置人員維持秩序也應負責任。這些批評都有理由的,只是更應批評的是那些湧進店來的購物人士。金融海嘯的衝擊,有經濟學家提出美國的消費型經濟已經不行了,必須要徹底的改變方向。可是,長久以來,企業所打營出來的節日消費文化已經根深柢固,又怎會是一夜之間能改得了的。領最低工資的臨時員工被搶購賤價商品的民眾踩死了,這足夠令人們反思嗎!!

Only in Walmart! Other stores give out numbers to people camping outside. Walmart likely didn't. And sadly the crowd that Walmart attracts is different demographically from other stores.

Agree with the statements of the first post. I do shop at Wal-Mart, not because like Wal-Mart but it is a place that I can find things I need close to my home.

I can say in front of the store entrance, you wil lhave no problem to see city police car park there. I am sure Wal-Mart pays extra just to have this "extra" service to make the place a little bit "look" safe.

Wal-Mart is a different place, no doubt about it.

There was a porgram about Wal-mart on the PBS station frontline. It is a worthwhile to watch how Wal-Mart conducts its business.
