意想不到的溫柔

  陪伴著母親在不同醫療機構的日子裡,接觸過不少醫護人員,有醫生、護士、護士助理、各類治療師、社工和傳譯人員;有白人、非裔、菲律賓裔、西語裔、中東裔和華裔。至今令我印象最深刻的是Steve。



  Steve身高約六呎二吋,身材魁梧結實,應有二百磅。圓圓面的Steve一頂陸軍戰士的超短髮,下巴卻留有一把相當濃密的鬍子。若單純以貌取人,Steve不怒而威的外表,更似是職業軍人或保安人員過於是一名註冊護士。可是,樣子粗獷的他,在病房裡比其別的女護士更體貼病人,對病人家屬更是以心相待。

  每一次在病房內見到Steve,他都會主動的上前來詳細說明母親的狀況,以及他接下來的護理安排。一般護士大都是忙於自己的工作,對來探病的家人,禮貌地招呼會有的,但少有會如主動報告。更難得是對於沒有醫藥知識家屬的提問,Steve會用最簡明的方式耐心地解釋。而且,Steve除了有禮外,聲音永遠保持不緩不急,難有的柔和。

  護士工作繁重,壓力大,Steve對病人的細心照料可以用盡責來形容,但連家屬的感受也體諒及關顧,則非一個更業樂業可以解釋。他帶進病房的除了專業技能外,更重要的是一份愛。這份愛比特效靈藥更有價值和更難求。

I don't have exactly the same experience as yours, but I had some my dosages of caring my father for a period of a few years; especially visiting emergency rooms, intensive care units from to time to time.

Yes, there is an army of health care workers in the hospital. I noticed that they usually have a lot of patience. They also multi-tasking most of the time. I would say they are well-trained to handle their tasks.

Next time I see health care worker go on strike (labor contract negotiation), I'll put my myself in their shoes. They certainly deserve what they make for what they do.
