瀟灑走一回
剛過的周末下午約四時許，筆者在灣區一處小商場的一家意大利餐廳，少有悠閒地獨個兒享受一個晚午膳。耳機內傳來是格林斯潘自傳的朗讀版，眼對著巨型玻璃窗觀看街外稀疏的行人。格老經歷了美國戰後至今的種種動盪，並主宰美國以至全球經濟近廿年之久，他雖退下前線，但他所走過之處，無不留下深深的烙印。至今，人們還是十分渴望聽到他對時局的分析。正在細味意大利麵條和格老的生平之際，窗外忽然現出一張熟悉的面孔，她就是三藩市的前估值官鄧式美。
可以用滿臉春風來形容的鄧式美與親人同遊，筆者把握這機會向久違了的朋友問好，急忙走到店外與她短暫傾談，原來她又將離開本市。看來，她的身份已由本市市民，變為灣區過客。當年誰會想到，風雨不改挨家逐戶拜票，於三藩市政壇由社區大學校董、進而攀任市參事，乃至最後高票當選估值官的鄧式美，會在眾人議論她會否成為三藩市首位華裔市長之際，卻戛然急流勇退突然辭職。她在眾人意料之外徹徹底底地放棄了十多年從政生涯所建立的事業，回歸純私人生活的空間。不管箇中理由是什麼，能如此「瀟灑走一回」確真的不容易。
在鄧式美辭職後才當選，只做了幾個月市參事的趙悅明，四個月來官非不斷，正面對市和聯邦政府的刑事檢控。紐森市長上周五曾與趙單獨面晤，試圖說服趙自動辭職專心應付訴訟，但被趙拒絕。紐森昨日宣布動用市憲章權力，依兩官司起訴為據，指控趙行為不當，暫停他的職務，並呈市參事會最終撤除他的市參事資格。
月來堅強面對困境的趙悅明被限令即時搬清辦公室，看到市府職工抹除趙辦公室大門上的名字時，令人唏噓萬分。
人生路不易走，而最難者是知所進退！

Both Tang and Jew got problems with themselves. They mis-managed their own political lives. The differences between them is: one is a fourth (third?) generation immigrant American, the other is not. Just different mentality/sense/view about guilt. Both of them have done something wrong. One insisted that guilt needs to be proved. Nothing wrong with "to be proved". No wonder we have an oversupply of lawyers. In Asia, an airline accident can cost the job of the chief excutive officer of the airlines company. Did the chief executive officer cause the aircraft crash? Not exactly; but that is the attitude about management of an airline operation. To provide safty transportation to the paid customers. Jew got kicked out of office is just a matter of time.
He chose the disgraceful option. That is his choice, but a stupid choice. Just dragging on does not prove anything.
